This will be quick, but thought-provoking.
My life entails a broad spectrum of activity. Oftentimes, I’m called in to solve either unsolvable problems, untangle Gordian knots, or “fix” heretofore unfixable business models or marketing approaches or revenue strategy.
But on rare occasions, I get the pleasure and privilege of shifting entire segments of a marketplace’s mindset, paradigm and world-view. When that happens, it’s exceptionally gratifying to me. And (I hope) it’s exceedingly thought-altering to those who experience the process.
In the last few months, I’ve gotten the opportunity to achieve this kind of impact twice. Once was for a very youthful group of emergent entrepreneurs. The other time, it was for a group of conventional-thinking real estate professionals in Canada. One session was an intimate understanding of how the “other side” sees your purpose, proposition and appeal. The other was a more sweeping, global take on the ultimate meaning of business life.
I’m sharing with you two, full-length, “private presentations” each approximately 65 minutes in length.
The first was my address to the Thiel Fellowship (for which I was appointed a mentor). In case you’re unfamiliar with the organization, it was started by a founder of Paypal who believes fervently in entrepreneurialism. But — believes entrepreneurs should work on their business and not necessarily work on their academic education. There are 40 “wickedly-bright” young men and women in the fellowship. Each is paid $50,000 a year for two years by the organization to work on any entrepreneurial project they desire. I was a keynote for a special session and focused my discussion on how, why and what a prospective co-founder or investor or resource provider thinks – and what turns them on and turns them off! I think you’ll enjoy listening to the audio.
Separately, I was in Vancouver and was co-keynote (meaning there were two keynote speakers). Ahead of me was Kevin O’Leary, one of the “sharks” from Shark Tank, and a renowned investor and entrepreneur in Canada. Then, I spoke for an hour on how to think and act and transact business in a preeminent manner that embraces the fullest greatness within someone.

I owe today’s thinking to my good friend/colleague, Robert Hargrove. We talk regularly about a wide “swath” of business and life issues. Deep, stimulating, thought-provoking discussions.
Today, out of left field, our conversation turned to struggling entrepreneurs… you know the picture… underperforming, under-earning, under-selling, under-succeeding their goals, dreams or needs.
Anyhow, Robert blurted out an impromptu statement that knocked me off my chair. You might be provoked to think about it, too!
He said – most struggling entrepreneurs suffer from EITHER half-baked ideas or half-baked efforts.
Now – our conversation COULD have stopped there and been done…and the thought would have dissipated into the vaporous cosmos. But – I stopped Robert in mid-statement saying – that might be the most profound insight anyone has ever recognized.
He looked puzzled. Perhaps you are, too. Here’s my interpretative take (so you can see what I saw in this statement).
Now, remember I’ve recently become “near-fixated” on the recognition that every human being wants/craves (and is programmed) for greatness, but few ever attain it remember “why”?
- They don’t know what it looks like.
- They don’t know the highest/best, most impactful path to pursue it.
- They don’t have the self-confidence, courage to change direction and march to a different drummer.
- If they DO get started and it seems challenging, or they become derailed – they have no one to set them back on the right track, no one to believe in them/support them enough to keep them progressing – until enough success momentum and velocity takes over.
Well – now go back to Robert Hargrove and his comments about half-baked ideas and half-baked efforts.
I submit – and I hope you agree, that no one in their right mind would knowingly, purposely, continuously pursue a half-baked (meaning, limited-viability, convoluted or problematic, flawed, concept/business model/product/service or market, idea or effort — would you?!
So IF most people pursue half-baked ideas – it can only mean they don’t know any better. They don’t know what high success-probability looks like, they don’t know higher and better product/service models/markets, etc. to pursue.
Again – no one purposely wants to be half-baked.
Same goes for half-baked effort. No one spends a career or backs a business, only to perform mediocre – or worse, to fail. So IF you’re executing, implementing, selling, marketing, promoting, competing half-baked – it most likely means you don’t know what executing full-out/masterfully and strategically means…or looks like!
Let me continue – because, I want to give just “dues” where deserved.
Robert went further to make another provocative point. He says most people incorrectly focus on what’s wrong – instead of correctly focusing on “what’s missing.”
Why am I sharing this? First of all, “why not?”
I think it’s quite profound in its disarmingly elegant understatement.
Furthermore, it tracks perfectly with my recent thoughts about greatness or lack, thereof.
Finally it feeds my supposition that anyone reading this wants to know how to move themselves and their business from mediocrity to magnificence.
By the way – if you think I’m setting you up to sell something here – think again. I am NOT. I’m merely respecting your intelligence and trying to “hauntingly” provoke you to think differently about whether or not you and your business paradigm may be unknowingly “stuck.”
And what if you ARE? What’s a half-baked, mediocre-minded, misguided entrepreneur to do – to move yourself (and your self worth), your business, your ideas and your effort into more stratospheric realms of greatness?
Well, a couple of things I might suggest right away:
- Re-read everything I’ve done, written, said or presented on preeminence – because, odds are you aren’t following many (if any) of its foundational beliefs.
- Review my 12 Pillars of Strategic Success. Particularly look at the segment that discusses making SUCCESS a natural part of your everyday thinking/actions – and discuss what success thinking looks like.
- Review the Nine Drivers of Exponential Growth and then, self-audit your mindset and methods of thinking about and doing business. Remember I focus you on strategy-marketing-business model-ideology-process/
procedure-relationships- capital deployment, etc.
- Go through the Greatness, 4-Part Checklist. Do YOU really know what greatness looks like for yourself — and business? Do you REALLY know what path will take you there — fastest, safest, best? Do you have the courage/commitment to pursue that path? If you’ve fallen off the wagon – do you have someone to set you back on the right path – and believe in your greatness?
- Are you thinking critically about the implications, correlations, and assumptions/ideology your actions and activities are currently based upon?
- Do you understand what true value means to your marketplace?
People criticize me a bit lately for seeming to be more philosophical/ideological than transactional. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I’m merely trying to invoke, engage, install the high performance “supercharger” you may be currently missing, in all you do – FOR without the elements I’m focusing on here fully installed/instilled/engaged – you can’t possibly transform mediocrity into magnificence.

Half-baked or magnificent.
You decide. That’s your self-diagnostic, reality-check question.
My life has been devoted to REALLY performing at optimal, I like to say at absolute “greatness.” I’m not just about developing the greatness within myself, but equally focused on enhancing the greatness that I can stimulate, develop, support, direct, and concentrate in other people — for themselves and for all the others that THEY impact.
I started recently thinking about it more overtly, clinically and critically, and I realized that there are four “explicit” elements to greatness.
First of all, greatness IS inherent in everybody. We have it in our DNA. I believe we’re all pre-programmed for greatness. There’s no one I’ve ever met who REALLY wants to be just average or mediocre. You don’t want to be an average “whatever you do” i.e. real estate manager, innkeeper, or entrepreneur.
You also don’t want to be mediocre (or average) as a spouse, father, mother, a contributor to your community, to the world, or to society. You want your life to be about something far beyond mediocrity.
If you are inherently programmed to want greatness (and driven to achieve greatness), why then, do so FEW people really realize it, manifest it, and accomplish it in their lifetime? That’s the question. My answer is, there are four interesting forces or factors that have basically worked against you. None of them are your fault, you have to understand it. They are surprisingly easy to overcome.
- The first one is that… no one has ever painted a picture for you of WHAT true greatness really could (and should) look like in all facets of your life, professionally, commercially and personally. No one has ever said, “Here’s what being a great mentoring realtor looks like,” “Here’s what’s being a great technology expert looks like,” and looks like from MANY different vantage points, not just the abstract (amorphous), macro.
But, rather you need to look at it from a very critically, clinically, and granularly focused basis.
You need someone to show you, “Here’s what it looks like in the way you conduct yourself towards your client,” “Here’s what it looks like in the way you communicate with clients, team members, venders.” “Here’s what it looks like in the way you execute your actions/activities,” “Here’s what it looks like in the way you articulate your offer/benefit/proposition,” “Here’s what it looks like in the way it’s received (and perceived) on the other side.”
- The second part: If you don’t have a “clear-cut” picture of what you’re ascribing/aspiring towards, how in the world can you get there? It’s like saying, “I don’t know where I am. I don’t know if I’m in Los Angeles or New York. I want to go on vacation, but I don’t know where I want to go. I don’t know if I want to go south or north.” If you don’t know where you are and you don’t know where you’re trying to get to, how could you possibly, know the path to take?
- Thirdly: Most people don’t have a clear-cut vision of the path to take for the first reason. They don’t know where they’re going. If they DO know where they’re going, they still don’t know how to get there, and no one has really showed them how to stair-step (slowly, safely, progressively) as opposed to trying to be an Olympic pole-vaulter from the get-go.
If you don’t know what it looks like, you’re limited, restricted, constrained, and impeded. If you KNOW what it looks like, but you don’t have a clue what path is going to take you there, it’s almost a pyrrhic victory.
If you know what it looks like and you know the path, most people don’t have the self-confidence or belief in their own deservedness, ability, capability to really get pursuing it, to walk to the beat of the different drummer. So they stay on the sidelines… intimidated, uncertain, insecure, equivocating, and procrastinating.
- Finally, if you’ve got the wherewithal to transcend all three of those levels, factors, forces, meaning:
- You CAN get clarity on what greatness is supposed to look like at all ranges, realms, facets.
- You CAN get an idea of the “destiny path” that’s going to take you there, the safest, the surest.
- You HAVE enough faith in yourself to get started.
What frequently happens, then — even if you get that far IS, normally, you can muster up the courage, self-reliance, commitment, resourcefulness to get started on that path and you have the clarity of the vision where you’re going.
However, if the first time gets rugged, or you get detoured, or derailed, or impeded, or frustrated, or embarrassed, normally what happens IS that’s the last time you do it.
Think about anything you’ve ever done differently for the first time in your life, taking up a hobby, taking up a skill, whether it was a foreign language, golf, long-distance running, anything. The first time you ever probably did it, you were terrible, and it was easier to really abandon it than it was to pursue it and go forward.
You immediately default and spring back to status quo. You go back to where you were before, and the reason is that you have no one to believe in you, to support you, to love you enough, admonish you enough, cajole you enough, and inspire you enough.
You need all four of those Elements — to achieve Greatness. That’s my belief. You need someone masterful, to support, direct, develop, course-correct, inspire, encourage, and fuel your progress from mediocre to magnificence. Someone to set you and keep you on all the right paths.
